From the beach to a bar……..
How did we begin writing business plans per the old cliché “on a cocktail napkin”? It all began with a walk on the beach, sharing conversation with my good friend, Colleen, and ending in an idea for a product called ReaderWraps. The next thing you know, CleverWraps is born and we are inventing products to protect eyeglasses, cell phones, eReaders, tablet pc’s….you name it. If you have a pair of eyeglasses needing protection from hair color chemicals or a portable electronic device like a cell phone or eReader needing protection from water, sand, snow, sunscreen, or whatever….the CleverGals have the answer! Yes, we are the CleverGals! 3 years after that walk on the beach, here we are….sitting at the bar at The Chart House in Alexandria, VA with my ever supportive husband, AKA: Marketing Genius, writing up our latest marketing plan on a cocktail napkin! Keep in mind; this is after two very strong, delicious mojitos!
It’s been an interesting journey. Two” fifty something” women reinventing themselves. Stay at home moms turned Tasmanian Devil Entrepreneurs! We have learned about patents, trademarks, polyethylene, polypropylene, adhesives, printing, recycling, packaging, heat sealers, trade shows, financing, order processing, bookkeeping, merchant accounts, websites…..so many things. We have had a college education (and then some) in these three years. We can talk to anyone about our products which protect your valued assets….from the little lady in Southern Virginia who isn’t quite sure which size RingerWraps to order for her friend who has collected numerous water and sand damaged cell phones, to executives of huge corporations in their gorgeous offices up high in skyscrapers from Nashville to New York. We know our business and we are passionate about it. We work hard and we never have enough time in a day. And now it is all coming together and we are going to achieve the goals we have set…..on cocktail napkins!
The CleverGals work from 3,000 miles apart. Colleen in San Diego, and me, in Northern Virginia. We spend hours a day together on the phone. We work hard and we laugh often and hard. Sometimes we are so spent, we laugh at absolutely nothing but the absurdity of our days. Good communication and excellent relationship building skills have had to be developed when working like this. We have found that without a doubt, the single most important factor and blessing in our business, are our relationships. Our relationship with each other (which, against all odds has absolutely flourished running a business together), and our relationships with the wonderful business people we are blessed to have met and gotten to know in our journey. For example, we have become truly, the best of friends, with Tom, our distributor partner, we never miss a chance to have lunch in Solana Beach with Phil, one of our advisers, and we always enjoy sharing a cup of coffee with Franz, our creative genius! We have developed bonds of friendship with our vendors, investors, lawyer (!), bookkeeper, customers, hoteliers (from time on the road), our photographer, graphic artist, and those brilliant business people we have the honor of calling our advisers. So, it seems appropriate that a business built so solidly in relationships and social skills, would be outlined and planned, in the most social setting of all……while eating and drinking together! Hence, the cocktail napkin!
